Dormbuys.com

As Director of Technology for online retailer Dormbuys.com, I re-engineered their existing e-commerce website from an off-the-shelf shopping cart software to an enterprise-grade system that runs all aspects of the business, including supply chain management, order fulfillment, purchase orders and customer orders. One of many unique aspects of the system is a real-time box-packing algorithm coupled with real-time shipping calculations. This allows the system to provide a shopper with a near exact estimate of their shipping costs as they add items to their cart. The new site is deployed on a multi-server scalable cluster architecture.

As a Senior Project Manager at software development firm ADSNetcurve, I led a team of domestic and international developers to create this unique web application. In addition to advertising apartment listings in both English and Spanish, the application also facilitates ongoing multi-lingual communication in the pre-rental phase, and after a customer moves into an apartment. The system automatically translates work orders and other tenant requests - as well as the landlord’s responses - from one language to another, allowing two parties to communicate in their own language without confusion. The language translation algorithm that I created for the site is patent pending.

As part of the interactive team at Visual Scientists Inc., I helped build this promotional website for Rick Thomas, a Las Vegas magician. The site features stunning 3D scenes depicting an enchanted castle. The site’s technical architecture features a fully object-oriented design implemented with ActionScript2. All videos on the site are served through a dedicated streaming media server, while some of the visual effects are embedded videos.

About - brianwebb.org

I’m Brian Webb, and this site is my personal portfolio and blog. I am a software developer, designer, and all around technology evangelist. Here you will find the latest projects that I've worked on as well as some of the problems and ideas that I'm currently tackling or pondering.

I program in a wide array of languages and frameworks, including Ruby, Ruby On Rails, ActionScript, Flex, PHP, ASP.NET, C#, VB, Java, Perl, Python, C/C++ and others. I also have experience in information security and systems architecture and administration on platforms such as Windows Server, Linux, OS X, BSD and others.

The challenge of creating something from nothing is what drives me, not just to create software, but to learn and adapt to the changing needs of the industry to always be on the cutting edge.
